Margaret Costner was a very noble character, and to her is given the credit for our Hoyl family being an outstanding sober family, even at a time when everybody made and sold whiskey. She is quoted as saying daily to her sons: "Every one of you needs all your mother-wit, don't befuddle your brain with whiskey.'' Margaret had a sister, Mary Costner, who m. Philip Rudisill, and lived on what is now known as the ''Black'' home, on the east side of the South Fork River, about half-way between the Hardin Cotton Mills and High Shoals, in what was then Anson County, now Gaston County, North Carolina. This was a large tract of 520 acres, extending eastward across Hoyl's Creek. The land was granted him by the King of England, May 20, 1754. [Philip Rudisill made his will on Aug. 4, 1793 and d. 1794; the witnesses were Jacob Rein (Rign), Jacob Simmerman (usually spelled with a "Z"), and Jacob Shatley.] A brother, Peter Costner, m. Mary Magdalene Dellinger, sister of Margaret Dellinger, wife of Michael Hoyl II; another brother, Major Jacob Costner, m. Elizabeth Brooks Hoyl, widow of Jacob Hoyl I, ''Pioneer Peiter'' Heyl' s oldest son; still another brother, Thomas Costner, m. Jennie Lowe (Lau). These three brothers of Margaret Costner Hoyl fought in the Revolutionary War. Peter Costner was a Tory, and fought valiantly for George III, with Lord Cornwallis; was true to his oath of allegiance to King George II, and was killed in the battle of Ramsour's Mill, June 20, 1780. Thomas Costner was a Whig, and fought also in the battle of Ramsour's Mill. He was pensioned by the United States Government, till his death, thirty-two years later.
