Notes - John L. Costner, son of Andrew and Sally Costner, was born in Davidson County, Tennessee, August 31, 1815. He came to Southeast Missouri with a caravan of settlers who settled near Bessville; the date is not known. He married Nancy Bailey. It is not known if the Bailey family came to Missouri in the same group of settlers, but it is thought they did not. Indications are the Baileys had settled in that section of the country many years earlier. There is a Bailey cemetery on the Bailey place (now known as Husky farm) near Hog Creek that has indications of being much older. This cemetery seems to have been established long before the Locust Grove Church.
At one time John L. Costner owned a large acreage of farmland on Hog Creek in Bollinger Co. Records show various grants drawn in his favor. Shortly before his death records show grants going the other way. Talk among the relatives in the early part of the 20th Century were that he deeded his land to his sons. This probably is true as his Will, which was probated by his sons, showed an estate of only a few dollars after settlement of debts. A portion of his old home place remained in the hands of his descendants until a few years ago. The old home was built before the Civil War and was burned by an arsonist in the early sixties or seventies. It was more than 100 years old. His Will was recorded and Letters granted in 1878. James M. Chostner, Sr. and Moses Franklin Chostner were administrators. Only $22.93 was left after debts were paid.
